Workshop Leader: Jonathan Speirs
Jonathan SpeirsJonathan trained as an architect and developed a passion for working with light from early in his career. He co-founded Lighting Design Partnership in 1984, the first truly independent lighting design practice in the UK. In June 1992 he left to form Jonathan Speirs and Associates in Edinburgh. The following year he formed a working association with Mark Major which developed into Speirs and Major Associates. He is the Director responsible for running the day to day activities of the Edinburgh Studio. Jonathan has worked on a diverse range of projects all around the world from architectural lighting to urban master-planning and light art. His work has been honoured with multiple international and national lighting awards including the Lighting Dimensions International Architectural Lighting Designer of the Year Award in 1997. He has also worked on four RIBA Building of the Year Stirling-prize winning projects. SaMA were honoured to be awarded the Best Public Building Award and Lighting Design Project of the Year for the interior of the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nayan Mosque, Abu Dhabi in the recent 2008 Middle East Lighting Design Awards programme. At this years International Association of Lighting Designers Awards in Las Vegas Speirs and Major Associates scooped one Award of Merit and three awards of Excellence plus their top Radiance award for Barajas International Airport.
